Over 65 young players attended the Raider Basketball Skills Clinic last Thursday at Enfield High School. There was no charge for attending the event and it was open to boys in grades 3 through 8 from the Enfield district. The clinic, which had been promoted throughout the school system, focused on basic shooting skills and defense.

Cory O'Connell, Enfield High Varsity coach, began the program last year. His concept was to foster a positive attitude toward basketball with younger players and direct them on skill development. Assisting O'Connell were EHS Girls Varsity coach Ladd Gowan and John Wiley and Bruce Hargraves from the boys program. A contingent of high school players demonstrated various skills and worked with the younger players individually.

O'Connell said that "It's important to provide a program for the community in response to all the support that the high school athletic programs receive. I hope that students and parents alike can benefit from our clinics in some manner." O'Connell further noted that basketball should be played for the enjoyment and health benefits that it provides. Basketball is a great sport for everyone, regardless of their degree of proficiency. It's a sport in which you can participate and just have fun.

This was the 3rd clinic held at EHS and had the best turnout to date. With the increasing success of the program, O'Connell is anticipating having another event, possibly in February. Information will be distributed in the elementary and middle schools for interested parties.
